eBay: Stanford Mall Navigation
First Person - San Francisco, CA
Similar to just about every other industry, retail is becoming more and more reliant on massive amounts of data to better serve its customers. Collecting and leveraging that data is another challenge all together, but engaging shoppers is the first step. A group known as eBay Innovations worked with First Person to create an innovative navigation experience that would first make an appearance at the Stanford Shopping Mall in Palo Alto California. This experience had to be just as informative as it was engaging and not only draw the user in but have them walk away having accomplished their task.
The experience and creativity that eBay brought to every meeting made this project incredibly rewarding and efficient. Through the use of elegant simple design and an impressive 3D map of the mall the prototype was a resounding success. A huge percentage of those that visited the mall over a holiday season used the kiosks and of those people about two thirds completed a navigation experience. Below are several materials that illustrated the problem solving and design that went into this groundbreaking interactive experience.

The Creative Process
This is just one of those problems that can't be solved by starting on a computer. Several meetings took place with markers and construction paper to work things out at actual scale. So many things we thought would work didn't even come close when we put it up on the wall.
The Design Process
This is just a sampling of our design tests as we started to lay them out on the 3D map. This is where the team really started to figure out how deep the menus could go and how quick the experience could be used while remaining useful.
